Learning How To Make Beats (Producer Training Tips)
So you’ve thought about making beats but do not know where to start? Or maybe you’ve already invested a little money in gear/ software and do not know what your next step should be? Either way I’ve some information here that will point you in the right direction.
Learn Your Gear – Get familiar with your equipment and it’ settings. It is always good to know where your sounds are and such this way when your listening to other peoples beats you know exactly where to go for the sounds or ones that are similar. I suggest you get familiar with Eq as well.
Pick a genre – Pick five beats (tracks) in one genre (east, west, south etc). It is better to find the instrumental but if you cannot just use the song as is. Try to keep this tracks simplistic as possible but quality.
Study The Tracks – Listen to the same song over and over and write/jot down the sounds you hear in the song. This is very important to your ear training. If you do not know what the instrument is take an educated guess.
Another useful fact around this subject matter. Turn On The Gear Activate your hardware or software of choice then find the same sounds that you wrote down (that were in the song). Hopefully you picked a beat that did not contain too many sounds.
HOW TO MAKE BEATS!
One Sound at A Time – Lay each sound down one by 1, this means each drum hit, snare, piano note, synth and so forth now again if you’re just starting out this can be a little frustrating which is why I suggest using a beat with very little sounds (5 max). Using a beat with five sounds will allow you to find and start making beats right away.

Practice – I mentioned earlier picking five simple beats what you want to do is remake each one five times or until you get it to where the beat sounds really close this will help your ear training and production skills.Yes do this will all five then move on to more complex beats. The more you do this you more you sound design, train your ear, learn arrangement as well as creative mixing techniques.
Now What? – Once you’ve completed the above step you can begin creating your own material. You’ll have remade enough tracks to know which sounds work best with one another to sit at any piece of equipment at any time and just bang out out a track. Not only that but you will be able to listen to an artist and go ” I am going a make a track that fits that artist” without a problem. Granted this is a short article and I am sure you might have questions or need more in depth training. Some of you might even want to see this method performed not just explained in text.. Not to worry I got you covered!
If you’d like to watch as a Defjam, Koch, Game (artist) & Young Buck Producer puts these methods to the test look at these two courses Hiphop Production Study Course & Piano Chord Progressions. Not only does this man show you how to make the tracks he holds your hand laying down each sound one at a time and telling you why he’s doing the things he’s and he helps his customers with music placements (without commission)
